Phillip W. Weitzel

Phil Weitzel, age 77, of Newell, Iowa died June 2, 2015 at his home in rural Newell. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Early, Iowa. Visitation will take place Friday, June 5, 2015 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Phillip William Weitzel was born August 5, 1937 in Early, Iowa, the son of Albert and Mae (Kolbe) Weitzel. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Early. He attended grade school at Century School Clinton Township #3. In 1955, Phil graduated from Early High School. On February 25, 1995, Phil was united in marriage to Carla Beem at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Phil was a proud member of the Iowa National Guard Reserve for eight years. He was on the Rural Electric Co-op board for the Sac Region for twenty-one years, Sac County Extension for eight years, and the Farmer’s Co-op board for twelve years. Phil was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell where he served as an elder and trustee. Phil spent his life working as a farmer. He loved being outside, especially walking the yard to make sure there were no dandelions growing up until this spring. Most of all, Phil loved his children and grandchildren. He always wanted to know where they were and what they were doing. His cat, Sam, also held a special place in his heart. Sam was treated like a baby, even during Phil’s hospital stay. Phil will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Carla Jean Weitzel of Newell, Iowa; children: Mylynn (Wade) Hanson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Rhonda (Don) Crandall of Chandler, Arizona; step children: Jeff Kingery of Newell, Iowa; Amy Gray of Lake City, Iowa; Jennifer Kingery (Jerry Ackerman) of Lytton, Iowa; Ryan Kingery of Paynesville, Minnesota; grandchildren: Shelby Kingery, Sophie Jean, J.J. Ackerman; Austin Kingery (friend, Anastasia Dennison); Andrew, Nick, and Megan Gray; Paige and Brett Korn; Cassidy Wallace; Britney (Josh) Randolph; Evan Hanson; brother, Eugene (Sandra) Weitzel of Early, Iowa; sisters: Elaine (LaDonn) Thayer of Odebolt, Iowa; Kay (Allen) Olson of Nemaha, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Debbie (Bart) Clayton-Putney of Newell, Iowa; Diane (Allen) King of Knoxville, Iowa; nieces, nephews; extended family and many friends. Phil was preceded in death by his parents; and sister.
