Muriel Johnson

Muriel E. Johnson, age 98, of Newell, Iowa died October 15, 2013 at Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa. Muriel Nelson was born October 7, 1915 in Scobey, Montana, the daughter of Clarence and Eliza â€œLizâ€ (Anderson) Nelson. Growing up, she lived with her family in Whitetail, Montana until age 8 when the family moved to Minnesota. She attended grade school in Whitetail and country school in Minnesota. She graduated from Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa in 1933 and started teaching country school. After teaching school for 10 years, she worked in an office in Los Angeles, California during WWII. She married Bob Johnson July 8, 1944 in Los Angeles. She kept books for BJK as she and Bob built a business in Newell. They were blessed with two children: Kay and James â€œJimâ€. Muriel was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years, and was a member of the Newell Providence School Board. The business kept her busy so any free time she had was spent with her family. In her spare time, Muriel loved reading, doing crossword and word search puzzles, and traveling. Family was very important to her and she especially enjoyed her six grandsons. She loved to tell a lot of fun stories about the family. A special memory of Murielâ€™s was volunteering at the USO in Los Angeles during World War II. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: James (Cindy) Johnson of Newell, Iowa; Kay (Royden) James of Torrington, Wyoming; grandchildren: Travis (Maria) Johnson of Los Angeles, California; Evan (Jill) Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; Scott (Melissa) James of Wheatland, Wyoming; Trevor (Kathryn) James of Laramie, Wyoming; Jonathan (Laura) James of Parker, Colorado; Corey (Shawna) James of Casper, Wyoming; great-grandchildren: Lily, Ava, and Carter Johnson of Los Angeles, California; Penelope Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; Briley, Cole, Paige, and Brooke James of Wheatland, Wyoming; Tyler and Natalie James of Parker, Colorado; brothers-in-law: Ken Bacon and Ed Reinmuth, special friend Linda Stauber of Newell, Iowa; extended family and friends. Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Johnson; parents, Clarence and â€œLizâ€ Nelson; brother, DeWayne Nelson; sisters: Agnes Matilla, Inez Mezyk, Doris Bacon, Rosalynde Reinmuth; and two nephews. Memorial donations will be given to â€œPleasant View Homeâ€ in Albert City.
