Marie E. Herron

Marie E. Herron, age 94, of Newell, Iowa died Monday, November 14, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Newell. Funeral services will held Friday, November 18, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements. Marie Elizabeth Hussey was born to Wilbur (W.D.) Hussey and Hattie Mae (Shaw) Hussy on August 31, 1922 in Omaha, Nebraska. As a child the Hussey family moved to Mason City, Iowa. Marie ultimately settled in Storm Lake. Marie attended West grade school and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1940. While in high school she played the trombone in the concert band, marching band and orchestra. Marie attended the Baptist Church in Storm Lake and taught Sunday school. A highlight for Marie during that time was preparing the Christmas sacks handed out during the Christmas program at the Baptist Church. Marie loved Christmas and transformed her home into a Christmas wonderland every year! When Marie’s mother passed away she helped her dad as a bookkeeper. Later, Marie worked as an operator at Northwestern Bill Telephone Company where she became a supervisor and instructor. Marie belonged to the Eastern Star #209 in Storm Lake. She served as Worthy Matron for 1 ½ years. She was in Toastmasters for several years. After Wilbur Hussey’s (Marie’s dad) close friends passed away he took responsibility for their daughter, Margaret Dailey. Marie considered Margaret a sister and shared many good times. In 1971, Marie married Leighton (L.B.) Herron after dating 2 weeks, 2 days and 1 ½ hours! LB was a beekeeper and an antique dealer in Newell at the time they were married. LB and Marie shared a love of antiques. Their home was filled with Royal Bayreuth, Hummels, Galle vases, and countless cups & saucers. In 1972, Marie retired. L.B. and Marie purchased a motorhome. They saw much of the United States and loved traveling. Together they made five or six trips into Mexico. When they stopped traveling Marie taught “55 Alive” and was also president of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship at Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. After LB died, Marie returned to Storm Lake. With the help of many church people, she moved to Alta on August 3, 2003. Because of declining health, Marie moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Newell Iowa in September 2016. The family of Marie are indebted to two amazing women who lovingly took care of her, were her health care advocates and dear friends – Patricia Kosky and Jean Sarchet. Family that will miss Marie are Margaret (Gary) Dailey of Fountain, Colorado; stepson, Lee (Diane) Herron of West Palm Beach, Florida; grandchildren: Janine (Russ) Emrick of Monument, Colorado; Jim (Carol) Cave of Tontitown, Arkansas; Bill (Jannell) Cave of Concordia, Kansas; numerous great grandchildren, extended relatives and friends.
