Joyce L. Holmes

Joyce L. Holmes, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Friday, November 24, 2017 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake. Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Joyce Lynette Cross was born November 13, 1924 to Clarence E. and Dorothy A. (Atkey) Cross in St. Catherine’s Ontario, Canada. She was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church and graduated from Lafayette High School in Niagara Falls. Joyce attended nursing school in Buffalo, New York where she graduated in 1946. On July 31, 1945 she was united in marriage to Virgil Holmes in Niagara Falls. This union was blessed with three children: James, Richard and Catherine. After Joyce and Virgil were married they moved to Des Moines, Iowa and later to Storm Lake in 1951. Joyce worked at the Buena Vista County Hospital as a registered nurse. Her loving care of Virgil enabled them to enjoy 50 long and happy years together as man and wife. Joyce took great pride in having a beautiful flower garden and was active in the garden club. She was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake and was a member of the church circle for many years. Joyce had a love for pets, especially cats and dogs. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: James (Donna Cech) Holmes of Oak Park, Illinois; Richard (Stephanie) Holmes of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Catherine Franciol of St. Martinville, Louisiana; Fairbanks, Alaska; sisters: Betty Cross of Gaylord, Michigan; and Dorothy Bratt of Groton, Massachusetts; grandsons: Ezra Klug of Seattle, Washington and Alec Holmes of Austin, Texas; extended family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Dorothy; her husband, Virgil ; and son-in-law, Hatton Franciol. Donations to your local animal shelter.
