Joan Elaine Martin

Joan Elaine Martin, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Monday, April 24, 2017 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 28, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 5-7:00 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The family requests memorials be designated to St. Mary's Catholic School in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Joan Elaine Demers was born August 20, 1934 at Swallum Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa to Margaret (McGarry) and Louis Demers. She was baptized as an infant in the Catholic faith and confirmed her faith as a youth. She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Joan attended school at Washington Township, Newell Consolidated School, Grant Township and later Sulphur Springs where she graduated in 1952. She attended Buena Vista College where she received an elementary teaching degree. Joan taught two years at Galva Consolidated School and one year at Hayes Consolidated School. Joan was conducting some business at The Commercial Trust & Savings Bank and met a young teller who appeared pretty neat. Later they met again at the Cobblestone Ballroom. He asked for the next dance and the rest is history. On June 4, 1956 Joan was united in marriage to Dale Martin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple were blessed with five children: Dennis, Donna, Douglas, Dwight, and David. Joan enjoyed cooking, baking, and working with her husband and children improving houses and apartments. She liked refinishing furniture and woodwork. Joan enjoyed time with her family and friends and loved playing games, especially cards, with them. Her pastime was spent reading. She worked many years in downtown, Storm Lake: The Woman’s Shop, Ressler Drug Store, Joyce’s Greenery, and J.C. Penny’s. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Dale of Storm Lake; their children Dennis ( Lori) Martin of Des Moines, IA, Donna (Curt) Salton of Ayrshire, IA, Douglas Martin of Willmar, MN, Dwight Martin of Hartford, IA and David Martin (Sabine Kibby) of Indianola, IA. She will be missed by 22 grandchildren: Kelly (Nick) Kraska, Jason (Tatum) Martin, Allison and Tyler Martin, Leah (Mike) Wilson, Kristiana (John) Moore, Kevin Salton, Danielle (Eli) Smith, Joshua (Serena) Martin, Benjamin (Jessica) Martin, Bethany (Eric) Lancaster, Hannah (Adam) Cordes, Abigail (Nick) Ardoff, Josiah, Naomi, Jeremiah and Peter James Martin, Michael (Chelsea) Martin, Lucas and Samuel Martin, Lauren Martin (Aubrey Newman), and Emily Martin (DeAndre McGilberry). She will also be missed by 25 great-grandchildren: Abigail and Andrew Kraska, Caleb, Megan and Colton Wilson, Demelza Moore, Elisa, Carson, Aidan, Jackson, Adara and Ivory Smith, Ashton Martin, Jebediah, Hezekiah, Elijah, Melchizedek, Gideon, Anah, and Ezekiel Martin, Peyton Lancaster, Aubrey and Quincy Newman and Vaughn Houston and Zayne McGilberry. Joan is survived by sisters-in-law, Delphine Demers, Joan Phillips, and Joyce Hoskins, sister-in-law Elaine and her husband Gerald Carlson, and nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceding Joan in death were her parents, Louis and Margaret Demers, her brothers, Louis and Duane Demers, her sister Janet Hartman and her husband Jim Hartman, great-granddaughter, Amari Rae Newman, brothers-in-law Gilbert Phillips and Marion Martin and sister-in-law Norene Martin and daughter-in-law Jackie Martin. Also preceding Joan in death were her father-in-law, Wayne Martin and his wife Edna Martin.
