Ray Putney

March 6, 1935 - December 2, 2020

Ray Putney, age 85, of Newell, Iowa died on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Newell. Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Newell Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Newell Good Samaritan Society Garden at 415 W. Hwy 7, Newell, IA 50568; 712-272-3327. The family would like to extend a thank you to Good Samaritan Society of Newell for all care and love that the staff gave Ray while he resided there. The family appreciates all they did for him. Also, a thank you to the nurses, hospice aides, Chaplain and Social Director for all the care for that he received while in hospice. Thank you for the nurses who kept the family updated on his condition through the pandemic. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Claudius Ray Putney, the son of Arthur Putney and Bonnie (Eggers) Putney Ewoldsen, was born on March 6, 1935 in Osceola, Iowa. Growing up, Ray attended country school in Osceola until the 8th grade. On December 17, 1955, Ray was united in marriage to Jeannette John at the Leon Christian Church in Leon, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four children: Andrea, Barton, Barry, and Amy. Through his working career, Ray spent most of the time working as a farm hand. He milked dairy cows for approximately 30 years and loved his cows. After leaving the farm life, he started working for IBP on the production line. Once IBP became Tyson Foods, he worked on the line 10 years before retiring. In his free time, Ray loved raising gardens and canning his vegetables. He always shared his bountiful harvest with family and friends. Along with gardening, he also raised raspberries and enjoyed tending to his flower gardens. Another hobby of Ray’s was his woodworking which included making bird houses, bat houses, canes, walking sticks, and more. Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Andrea (David) Taylor of Newell, Iowa; Bart Putney of Newell, Iowa; Debbie Clayton of Newell, Iowa; Barry (Doreen) Putney of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Amy (Gene) Frehse of Fort Dodge, Iowa; bonus-daughter, Sara (Benny) Klassen of Seminole, Texas; brother, Leroy Putney of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Jeremy Taylor of Newell, Iowa; Chad (Jennifer) Taylor of Newell, Iowa; Michelle Taylor Wilson of Newell, Iowa; Sarah (Thomas) Ptack of Cherokee, Iowa; Adam (Amber) Taylor of Pueblo, Colorado; Heather (Greg) Pray of Pennsylvania; Nick (Kelsey) Putney of Pennsylvania; Hannah Imhoff of Addison, Texas; Kristopher Imhoff of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Brittany (Jeff) Jacobsen of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Samantha Frehse (fiancé, Tyler McDanel) of Rembrandt, Iowa; Chris (Kyla) Frehse of Jefferson, Iowa; Heidi (Tommy) Cardenas of Aurora, Colorado; David (Ansley) Klassen of Seminole, Texas; Shelby Klassen of Seminole, Texas; 25 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, David (Carol) John of Jefferson, Iowa; sister-in-law, Donna Hagerman of Lincoln, Nebraska; Jerry (Linda) John of Des Moines, Iowa; extended friends and family. Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette in 2009; parents, Arthur and Bonnie (Eggers) Putney Ewoldsen; parents-in-law, Donald and Thelma John; sister and brother-in-law, Clementine (Donald) Routh; brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Frances) Putney; sister-in-law, Janet Putney; brother-in-law, Duane Hageman; grandson, Nathan Taylor; newphews: Robert Putney Jr., Scott Putney, and Bill John; niece, Roberta Putney; and great-nephew, Daryn Foley.
