Michael Eugene Porter

June 23, 1941 - October 29, 2014

Michael Eugene Porter, son of Hubert and Melva Fredricksen Porter, was born June 23, in the year of our Lord 1941, in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Alta. After studying the teachings of the Bible, he was confirmed in his faith, May 29, 1955, by Pastor Walter Mueller at St. John Lutheran Church, Storm Lake. He would be a member there the rest of his life.

Mike attended school in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1959.
In 1963, Michael enlisted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Georgia and received an honorable discharge in 1965.

On April 24, 1966, Michael was united in marriage to Virginia “Ginny” Nimmo at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. The Lord blessed them with three children: Jeff, Eric, and Jodie.

Michael and Ginny lived on the farm north of Storm Lake. Mike farmed and later worked for the United States postal service as a mail carrier in Storm Lake. Mike retired in 2005.

Michael loved to golf and bowl. He had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh. Mike was active in his church serving as an Elder. He was a member of the AMVETS and especially liked to serve as a member of the Honor Guard. Starting in 2005, Michael and Ginny wintered in Arizona. In all his activities, family and friends were most important to him.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Doug Hines.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ginny Porter of Alta, Iowa; children: Jeff (JoAnne) Porter of Clemmons, North Carolina; Eric (Julie) Porter of Farmington, Minnesota; Jodie Porter of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Joe (Brooke) Murray; Jacob Porter; Kyle and Jason Porter; great-grandchild, Foster Murray; sister, Judith (Keith) Hines of Sac City, Iowa; extended family and friends.

We would especially like to thank the staff of the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, University of Iowa Hospital, Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, and Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center for their loving care throughout Michael’s illness.
