September 11, 1923 - February 25, 2021

Marie C. Nielson, age 97, of Omaha, Nebraska formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at the Remington Heights Retirement Community in Omaha. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. To watch the recording of the service, please visit Marie's tribute wall. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the CHURCH. Masks and social distancing are required for all guests in attendance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the St. Mary's School Foundation at 312 Seneca St Storm Lake, Iowa 50588. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Marie Catherine Nielson, the daughter of Hans and Mayme (Krebs) Smith, was born September 11, 1923 in Varina, Iowa. As an infant, she was baptized at St. Columbkille Catholic Church and later was confirmed at the same church. She received her education at St. Columbkille School in Varina where she earned her high school diploma in 1941. On January 7, 1948, Marie was united in marriage to Bob Nielson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. The couple had four children: Jacqueline, Jolene, Jane, and Kenneth. Marie believed in faith and family first. Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Guild, and Catholic Daughters of America. She was active in the “Reach to Recovery” Program, delivered Meals on Wheels, and worked on the Education Board. She also volunteered at the Buena Vista County Hospital. She worked at Penney’s Store for three years. In later years, she worked at the Graham’s Store for five years then at Feldman’s until it closed. Marie enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, puzzles, shopping, taking vacations with family, and taking care of her flowers. She loved dancing and the Big Band music. She also enjoyed working along with Bob when they were building their home. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jolene (Les) Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska; Jane (Eldon Purdy) Nielson-Tuttle of Omaha, Nebraska; Kenneth (Karla Tuttle) Nielson of Oak Harbor, Washington; grandchildren: Amy Medlock-Wolfe, Matt (Anne) Medlock, Jason (Tanna) Anderson; Nick (Melanie) Anderson, Liz (Jerod) Galaska, Sarah (Rocky) Bonella, Megan (Scott) Mendick, Allison (fiancé, Dalton Vaher) Nielson, Mitch Nielson, Ben (Joanna) Nielson; 17 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Molly Smith of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska; extended family and friends. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Nielson; daughter, Jackie and her husband, George Medlock; parents-in-law, Leon and Alta Nielson; infant twin great-granddaughters; and two brothers, Joseph (Dorothy) Smith and Edward Smith.
