Jeanette V. Worthan

October 24, 1921 - February 10, 2022

Jeanette V. Wilson Matthews Worthan, age 100, passed away on February 10, 2022 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, IA. A small celebration of life service for immediate family will be held at the United Methodist Church Witter Chapel, with burial to follow at the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to be made to the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, IA. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements. She was born on October 24, 1921 in Clay County at a farm house on the north shore of Pickeral Lake to Bernard W. Wilson and Belva Crisman Wilson. Jeanette grew up on farms in the Marathon and Laurens area. She graduated from Marathon high school as salutatorian in 1939. After high school she was employed in the Laurens area. Jeanette met Darrel Matthews in high school and they were married in 1942 in a parsonage in Spencer, Iowa. To this union was born a daughter, Karen Kay Matthews Rosene, in 1945. Darrel began barbering in Marathon, where they lived for 14 years. In 1962, they took the opportunity to join a barber shop in Napa, California. They enjoyed visits to San Francisco where Jeanette’s mother lived. After 7 ½ years they returned to Iowa in 1970 to be closer to family and Darrel opened the Golden Clipper Barber Shop in Storm Lake shortly after their return. They were happily married for 43 years before Darrel passed away in 1985. Jeanette married Ray L. (Dean) Worthan in 1988. They were married 20 years and enjoyed retirement, family, volunteering and traveling together before Dean passed away in 2008. Although Jeanette’s family received her main attention and love, she also pursued various job opportunities – especially enjoying her work at Berg Jewelers in Storm Lake for 20 years. After leaving her home in 2014, she enjoyed living at Lake Pointe Villa and the Methodist Manor Community. Jeanette was an active member of BPW, UMW, 500 card club, Cosmo club, Garden Club and was a volunteer at the senior center and BVRMC hospital. Jeanette loved working with her flowers, taking care of the butterfly garden at Frank Star park, walking, reading and sewing. Jeanette was extremely happy she was able to enjoy her 100th birthday celebration with the entire family in the fall of 2021. The family will love remembering her when they enjoy some her favorite things; such as playing Rummykub, eating chicken casserole, and walking by the butterfly garden in Storm Lake. Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Darrel, her husband Dean, her brother Hubert Wilson and sister Lois Grice. Jeanette is survived by her daughter Karen Rosene and husband Gary, grandchildren Kristi Ellis and husband Dave (Grinnell, IA), Wendy Goodchild and husband J.D. (Storm Lake); great grand children Courtney Goodchild (Nikki), Katelyn Goodchild, Molly Ellis, Ben Ellis (Britney), Luke Ellis, Anna Ellis, Sarah Ellis; and great great grandsons Cal Goodchild and Jackson Ellis; as well as Dean’s extended family, other relatives and friends.
