Eula Gayle (Jensen) Johnson Petersen, age 88, of Newell, Iowa died February 22, 2022 at the Good Samarian Society in Newell. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 25, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 24, 2022 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the CHURCH. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Good Samaritan Society of Newell, and Kindred Hospice. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of arrangements. Eula Gayle Jensen Johnson Petersen from Newell, Iowa, was born May 13, 1933 in Hay Springs, Nebraska to Viggo and Dora Thuesen Jensen. She was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran Church on the Mirage Flats near Hay Springs shortly after her birth and confirmed on March 30, 1947, at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. She attended school at Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs, graduating May 13, 1952. After graduation, Eula attended Commercial Extension Secretarial School in Omaha, Nebraska. In May 1953, she was employed by the Buena Vista County Hospital for a year and a half prior to her marriage to Allen James Johnson of Newell on October 27, 1954. To this union, five sons were born: Michael, Layne, Rodney, Jay, and James. Eula was a homemaker and began her career as a secretary at the Newell-Providence Consolidated School in the fall of 1972. In June of 1998, she retired from the Newell-Fonda School. On January 9, 1993, Eula married Howard Petersen of Newell and welcomed in four more children and eight grandchildren into her heart. She was a member of the Nain Lutheran Church, WELCA, Mrs. 500 Club, and Bid & Chat. She enjoyed volunteer work, including the Nain Lutheran Church and the Good Samaritan Center, where she belonged to The Helpers’ Club and the Advisory Board. She enjoyed keeping scrap books, baking, and taking in all the activities of her children and grandchildren. Eula is survived by her five sons and their spouses: Mike and Patty Johnson of Lenexa, Kansas, Layne and Mary Johnson of Conroe, Texas, Rod and Diane Johnson of Newell, Iowa, Jay and Gina Johnson of Huxley, Iowa, and Jim and Carolyn Johnson of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Graham Johnson, Kirsten Johnson, Brenda Johnson, Savannah Johnson, Jessica (Olivia) Johnson, Angie Johnson, Trisha Johnson, Eric (Tara) Johnson, Scott (Amber) Johnson, Greg (Breanna) Johnson, Niki Johnson, Ben Johnson, Levi Johnson, and Sorena (Jeff) Davis. In addition, she leaves four great grandchildren: Ames and Jett Johnson and Isaac and Calvin Johnson, plus two more on their way. Eula is also survived by three stepchildren and spouses: Debbe Bircher of Orlando, Florida; Patricia and Dennis Arnold of Iowa City, Iowa; Greg and Kim Petersen of Garner, North Carolina; one step-daughter-in-law: Mary Giles of Bend, Oregon. She leaves eight step-grandchildren: Tina Bircher, Sara Bircher, Quentin (Marjorie) Arnold, Justin (Christina Merwin) Arnold, Jenni (John) Saterfiel, Brandon Dean, Alisa Petersen, and Kessia Petersen. In addition, there are five step-great grandchildren: Miranda Bircher, Zain and Soren Arnold, Madalyn Saterfiel, and Juliet Curtis. Eula also leaves numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives, and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands: Allen Johnson and Howard Petersen; her parents: Viggo and Dora Jensen; her brothers: Virgil Jensen, Darrell Jensen, and Merlyn Jensen; and step son: Howard Petersen.
