Wanda V. Hansen

Wanda Hansen, age 89, of Schaller, Iowa died Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa. Wanda V. Hansen was born March 12, 1924, the daughter of Olaf and Mabel (Halling) Olsen, near Schaller, Iowa in Cook Township, Sac County, Iowa. She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller and after marriage she was confirmed at Cook Emanuel Lutheran Church in rural Odebolt. She received her elementary education in various country schools and graduated from Schaller High School in 1941. She was an excellent speller and went to state typing contest. In high school she was Bart Ogden's (school superintendent) secretary. She was involved in 4-H and was the recipient of the Good Grooming Award. She worked her way through BV College and earned her teaching certificate. She taught country school for two years and then married her first grade sweetheart Charles Hansen on September 5, 1945. They had eight children. Wanda was a self taught pianist, enjoyed accompanying students at band contest, and playing and singing at nursing homes. She loved to sew, even making her own wedding dress and numerous bridesmaids dresses for her family. Wanda loved gardening, vegetables and flowers. She was awarded "yard of the month" after they moved to Schaller because her gardens were so beautiful. Wanda was a devoted farm wife who loved cooking and helping others. If anyone was in need, Wanda was always willing to lend a helping hand. She was a willing hostess for numerous large family dinners. Wanda taught Sunday school for years. She was choir director and she loved Womenâ€™s Guild, Ladies Aid, and Good Fellowship. She was involved in Cook Merry Gardeners, 4-S, and Music and Literature. She took part in numerous community activities. Wanda and Charles liked to travel and going to dinner and dances with friends. She also liked playing Mrs. Claus for the Schaller Chamber. She enjoyed taking care of children and also attending the many activities of her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her eight children: Nancy and Warren Ploeger of Schaller; Wanita and Randy Wiese of Kingsley; Clarence and Kris Hansen of Schaller; Carolyn Goecke of Storm Lake; Charlie and Diane Hansen of Schaller; Darwyn and Sharri Hansen of Schaller; Chad and Robbi Hansen of Schaller; and Nora and Lance Demers of Bondurant. Wanda is further survived by her grandchildren: Lonnie and Kathy Ploeger, Lynn and John Wunschel, Lori Christiansen, Leah and T.J. Braunschweig, Lance and Myka Ploeger, Robert and Tricia Wiese, Robyn and Derrick Johnson, Lisa and Jared Carlson, Jill and Eric Myrtue, Jeff and Megan Hansen, Ryan and Annie Hansen, Holly Goecke, Evan and Reena Hansen, Katie and Pat Feilmeier, Chuck Hansen, Mallory and Mike McDonough, Nick Hansen, Staci Hansen, Heather Hansen, Kelsey Hansen and fiance' Andrew Roghair, Lucas Hansen, Aaron Demers, Austin Demers, Amanda Demers; great-grandchildren: Elle, Emerson, Charlie, and Enley Ploeger; Colton, Kenzee, Kyler, and Cody Wunschel; Zach, Anna, and Nate Christiansen; Jack and Luke Braunschweig; Alexis Ploeger and Reid Vogt; Tyler, Marissa, Corinne, and Dexter Wiese; Rylee and Raigen Johnson; Ethan, Braeden, Ava, and Dane Carlson; Cael, Blake, and Aiden Myrtue; Delainey, Chayse, Graceyn, and Kloey Hansen; Abby, Matthew, and Taylor Hansen; Raelynn and Bentley Hansen; Olivia and Joseph Feilmeier; Carson and Ryder McDonough; brother and wife, Earl and Mary Lou Olsen of Denison; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and sister-in-law and her husband, Leona and Elery Wallace.
