Wallace Arthur Taylor

Wallace Arthur Taylor was born January 22, 1926 to Arthur and Lillie (Daughtery) Taylor in Dickens, Iowa. He attended Logan Country School and graduated from Gillett Grove High School. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, serving on the Markab A D21, a destroyer tender. He witnessed the devastated city of Nagasaki, Japan from the platform of a railcar in December of 1945. He was on the Whangpoo River in the Port of Shanghai, China. He had many days of liberty there. He returned to the Bradshaw Place in Iowa to farm with his father. At a dance at the Roof Garden in Arnolds Park, he met his “Twinkle Blue”, Phyllis Marie Morris. They eloped on January 31, 1949. They lived in the Reading area in Minnesota. In 1950, they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa where he worked for the Hygrade meat packing plant for thirty years. He and Phyllis purchased an acreage in 1964 near Newell and Varina, Iowa. He was a fervent union man serving as a chief steward and contract negotiator. After Wallace retired in 1980, he kept working at a packing plant in Boulder, Colorado. He returned to Newell and worked at The Green Thumb and the Hog Buying Station. He and Phyllis attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg. After graduation they worked with special needs adults in Sac City, Mt. Ayer, and Decorah, Iowa. Wallace became a security guard at hotels and courthouses in the Twin Cities area. He was a man of deep faith who enjoyed attending the Baptist Church. Wallace enjoyed studying his Bible and discussing religion with family and friends. Wallace went home to God Saturday, October 18, 2014 in his 88th year, while in hospice care, at Aase Haugen Care Center in Decorah, Iowa. He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing. He is survived by his wife, “Twinkle Blue” Phyllis; sons: Richard (Bonnie) Taylor of Sac City, Iowa; Allen (Marilee) Taylor of Decorah, Iowa; David (Andrea) Taylor of Newell, Iowa; daughter, Susan (John) Marshall of Bloomington, Minnesota; grandchildren: Jason (Angela) Taylor, Ann (Brian) Wise, Christopher (Shirlee) Taylor, Bryon (Julie) Taylor, Nicole (Brandon) Brevig, Benjamin (Rebecca) Marshall, Thomas (Rose) Marshall, Shane Marshall, Jeremy Taylor, Chad (Jenn Bovero) Taylor, Michelle Wilson Taylor, Sarah (Thomas) Ptack, Adam (Amber) Taylor; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sisters: Alpharetta Palaschak of Adrian, Minnesota; Colleen Leonard of Lancaster, Ohio; Jacquelleen (Bruce) Vatne of Mendota Heights, Minnesota; brother, Arthur Roger (Susan) Taylor of Brook Park, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Richard (Shirley) Morris of Spirit Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law, Betty Miller, of Ilion, New York; extended family of generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Those who preceded him in death are his parents, Arthur and Lillie Taylor; brothers: Charles, Richard, and Kevin Taylor; sisters: Wanda and husband, Kenneth Drzycimski; Hazel and her husband, James Griffith; and Florence and her husband, Loren Siegersma; brothers-in-law: Fred Palaschak and Lonnie Leonard; parents-in-law, Roy and Marie (Donaldson) Morris; brother-in-law, Paul Miller; beloved grandson, Nathan Taylor; and step-mother, Estella Graham Taylor. May they all rest in peace and see the face of God. His smile and joy of being will be deeply missed as well as his ability to see the beauty of God in all of us. We will gather for a Celebration of Wallace’s life on November 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, 1615 West Milwaukee Avenue, Storm Lake, Iowa, 50588. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. There will be a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Aase Haugen Care Center, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, Iowa 52101; Storm Lake Baptist Church, or to the St. Croix Hospice, 951 N Linn Avenue, New Hampton, Iowa 50659. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
