Stephen Thomas Young

Stephen Thomas Young, age 78, of Sutherland, Iowa, died on January 19, 2022 at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 1, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hartley, Iowa. There will be a luncheon following services at the fire station in Sutherland, Iowa. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements. Stephen Thomas Young was born on September 24, 1943 in Cherokee, Iowa to Delbert and Regina (Miles) Young. Growing up, he attended Sulphur Springs School until it closed in 1960 and then graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1961. Stephen was united in marriage to Nancy Hoft on June 29, 1963 in Storm Lake, Iowa. To this union, five children were born: Brian, Jennifer, Melissa, Steve, Timothy. Stephen enjoyed sports and was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He always had a good joke in his back pocket and was an excellent cook. Stephen loved to sing with his beautiful tenor voice and play his trombone. He also loved being outside. You could find him fishing, gardening, canning, woodworking, and birdwatching. More than anything, Stephen treasured his time with his family. His grandkids held a special place in his heart. He took great pride in teaching them how to fish. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him. Stephen is survived by his wife, Nancy Young; children: Brian (Cheryl) Young of Frederick, Maryland; Jennifer (Mike) Whelan of Round Rock, Texas; Melissa (Mike) Pratt of Irene, South Dakota; Steve (Nith) Young of Storm Lake, Iowa; Timothy (Lyly) Young of Des Moines, Iowa; brothers: Mark (Christine) Young of Storm Lake, Iowa; Daniel (Jaynee) Young of Alta, Iowa; Christopher (Jeannie) Young of Breda, Iowa; sister: Maureen (Bob) Kelsey of Storm Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Michelle Young, Emily Young, Joe Whelan, Hannah (Joe) Paul, Bryant (Amanda) Jackson, Ben (Jen) Pratt, Eric (Melissa) Pratt, Amanda Pratt (Lee Milk), Leighton Young, Addie Young, Danica Young, Mikey Brown, Luci Young; great-grandchildren: Sam Paul, Rilyn Jackson, Mackenzie Jackson, Miranda Spear, Christian Spear, Matthew Spear, Cory Pratt, Freya Pratt, Luca Pratt, Elijah Milk, Mya Milk, great-great-grandchildren: Blake Saffle, Lydia Saffle. He was preceded in death by his parents: Delbert and Regina (Miles) Young; grandparents: Charles and Lulu Bell (Manzer) Young; James and Ellen (Condon) Miles; parents-in-law: Donald and Sally Hoft; brothers: Michael Young; Patrick Young; and niece, Allison Kelsey.
