Sophia Wetherell

Sophia Edeen Wetherell, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa died May 16, 2013 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake. Sophia Edeen Gunsior was born November 29, 1926 in Plains, Pennsylvania the daughter of Benjamin and Lottie (Kulas) Gunsior. She was baptized on January 1, 1927 and confirmed on September 21, 1938 both at St. Peter and Paul Church in Plains. Growing up, she attended school at St. Peter and Paul Elementary School in Plains. She spent time working at Grossingerâ€™s in the Catskill Mountains, Florida, and New York City. Most of Sophieâ€™s free time was spent dancing and watching stars like Jerry Lewis and Frank Sinatra. On December 6, 1961, Sophie was united in marriage to Charles Arthur Wetherell in Dakota City, Nebraska. At that time Sophie moved from New York City to Marathon, Iowa. Together, they were blessed with two children, Charlene Elizabeth and Edean Marie. Sophie was a member of St. Maryâ€™s Catholic Church in Storm Lake where she belonged to the Catholic Daughters and the St. Maryâ€™s Guild. She was also a member of Tops. In her spare time, Sophie enjoyed playing Bingo, shopping, quilting, and bowling. She loved spending time in the kitchen cooking and canning. Sophie and Charles enjoyed traveling together for many years. A favorite past time of Sophieâ€™s was attending sporting and musical activities of her grandchildren. Later in life Sophie loved to teach the staff at Methodist Manor how to dance. Sophie treasured spending time with her family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Charlene E. Wetherell of Alta, Iowa and her special friend, Monty C. Reinking; Edean M. (John M.) Murray of Storm Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Thomas Charles Stewart of Muscatine, Iowa; Christopher George Stewart of Spencer, Iowa; Cale Matthew and Grace Marie Murray of Storm Lake, Iowa; her siblings: Betty McPherson of Brick, New Jersey; Carol Gilman of Boca Raton, Florida; John (Rose) Gunsior of Wyoming, Pennsylvania; Rose (Dale) Wetherell of Storm Lake, Iowa; Peter (Barbara) Gunsior of Manchester, New Jersey; Leonard (Lorraine) Gunsior of Fairfax, Virginia; in-laws: Bernice Heske, Erla Wetherell, Carol Wetherell, Billy Joe and Connie Wetherell, Sharon Hervey, Shirley Wetherell and George Francis, Dale Culp, Dennis and Faye Wetherell; and many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Wetherell; parents, Benjamin and Lottie Gunsior; sister, Celia Sconda; her in-laws: Frank Sconda, Bill McPherson, Clifford and Ruby Wetherell, Dale and Marjorie Dicks, Bob Heske, Helen Fredericksen, Burton and Marilyn Wetherell, Phyllis and Darrell Brown, Richard Wetherell, Paul Wetherell, Larry Hervey, Carol Ann Wetherell Culp, Glen and Norene Wetherell, and Darlene Wetherell. A memorial fund has been established in memory of Sophie Wetherell with the St. Maryâ€™s School Catholic Foundation, 320 Seneca St., Storm Lake, IA 50588.
