Leo "Bud" Goedert

Leo "Bud" Goedert, age 90, of Varina, Iowa died Friday, May 16, 2014 at his home in Varina. Leo John Goedert was born September 2, 1923 in Maple River, Iowa, the son of Leo and Josephine (Pille) Goedert. As a child, Leo was baptized and confirmed in Maple River. He then attended school at St. Columbkille Catholic School in Varina where he later graduated in 1940 at the age of sixteen. On December 15, 1943 Leo joined the United States Army. He proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on April 29, 1946. On November 15, 1949, Leo was united in marriage to Harriet Mackey at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Together they were blessed with eight children: Sheri, Jane, Betty, Jim, Bill, Paul “Ron”, Carol, and John. Leo spent his life as a contractor and farmer. Woodworking was not only a career, but also a passion. With his strong hands, he crafted rosaries and toys for his children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends. Leo was an active member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also served as a Eucharistic minister. Leo was active in his community as a member of the American Legion, Legion of Mary Society, Foresters, Varina City Council, and the Varina Volunteer Fire Department. In his spare time, Leo loved to play cards and to read. He enjoyed being outdoors whether it was working on his lawn, fishing, or golfing. Most of all, Leo loved to spend time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Harriet Goedert of Varina, Iowa; children: Sheri Sullivan of Houston, Texas; Jane (Chuck) Gulley of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Jim (Martha) Goedert of Omaha, Nebraska; Bill (Karen) Mackey of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Paul “Ron” (Melanie) Mackey of Rochester, New Hampshire; Carol (Ken) Kies of Newell, Iowa; John (Amy) Goedert of Seminole, Florida; grandchildren: Jay (Maggie) Sullivan of Fairfield, Texas; Mike Sullivan of Chicago, Illinois; DeLora (Eric) Mowery of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Christopher (Andrea) Gulley of Amarillo, Texas; Melissa Claude of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; John and Mark Mahoney of Boone, Iowa; Mead Goedert of Detroit, Michigan; James Goedert of New Orleans, Louisiana; Jacob Goedert of Omaha, Nebraska; Gretchen (Brian) Ralston of Boston, Massachusetts; Greg Groggel of Brooklyn, New York; Laura Groggel of South Africa; Anne Groggel of Bloomington, Indiana; Megan (Tyler) Ruane of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Sarah Mackey of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Adam Mackey of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Kristi Mackey and Cory Mackey of Ida Grove, Iowa; Faith Mackey of Rochester, New Hampshire; Kevin (Heidi) Kies of Milford, Iowa; Katie Kies of Humboldt, Iowa; Ashley Goedert of Chanhassen, Minnesota; Abbie (Ryan) Huibregtse of Northfield, Minnesota; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Betty and husband, John Mahoney; granddaughter, Katherine Mahoney; siblings and spouses: Elgie and Marie Goedert; Pearl Herbaugh; Alice and Tom Archer; and Betty and Rich Blomberg.
