Kenneth Payne, age 92, of Alta, Iowa died Thursday, May 4, 2023 in Lakeland, Florida. Funeral services will take place Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Storm Lake Education Foundation. https://www.storm-lake.k12.ia.us/page/slcsd-foundation-alumni Kenneth Eugene Payne was born January 28, 1931 to Jess and Nina (Bell) Payne in Hitchcock, South Dakota. He graduated in 1949 from Seward High School in Seward, Nebraska. Kenneth went on to attend college at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1951 and served until 1955. While deployed, Kenneth worked aboard a heavy repair ship, the USS Jason, in Internal Communications during the Korean War. On January 29, 1961, Kenneth was united in marriage to Marlyse Storm in Sheldon, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two children: Gregory and Anthony. Marlyse passed away in 2002. Kenneth married Carolyn Young in Alta, Iowa on June 3, 2015 and welcomed in her three sons: Dennis, Wayman, and Blake. Kenneth was a member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa where he served on various boards. He was also a member of the Alta VFW, Lions Club and Serpaci Club. He enjoyed going to Dinner Date. Kenneth loved sports, especially football. He was honored to help his son, Tony, with the Sioux City Bandits and Omaha Nighthawks. Kenneth was also a big fan of racing. He attended the Indy 500 many times. While Kenneth was active in the sports world, his kids’ and grandkids’ events were his favorite. He could be counted on to support each of them in their various activities. Left to cherish Kenneth’s memory include his wife, Carolyn Payne; children: Greg (Janet) Payne of Lakeland, Florida; Tony (Amy) Payne of Jefferson, South Dakota; step-children: Dennis (Cathy) Caruthers of Stapleton, Alabama; Wayman Caruthers of St. Petersburg, Florida; Blake (Carey) Caruthers of Duette, Florida; grandchildren: Adam (Crystal) Payne; Madison and Sydney Payne; great-grandchild: Isaac Payne; extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Jess and Nina (Bell) Payne; first wife: Marlyse Payne; sister: Donna Switzer.
