Jean Stauter

Jean Stauter, age 88, of Fonda, Iowa died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell. Jean Ann Mercer was born on April 23, 1925 to Ralph and Eldora (Turner) Mercer in Fonda. Jean was educated in the Fonda schools and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Household Equipment in May of 1946. She taught home economics for one year in Galva, Iowa. Jean and Roy Stauter were married on November 27, 1946. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in 2011. She and Roy raised their family and lived their whole lives in Fonda. Jean was very active in her community and in the United Church of Christ in Fonda. She and Roy spent many years wintering in Hollywood and Deerfield Beach, Florida, but Fonda was always home. Many Florida and International friends spent time in their Fonda home and with them on the farm. They treasured their family, their friends, and their travels. Jean especially enjoyed and excelled in sewing and many handiwork projects. To this day we all have and treasure the hundreds of doilies that she crocheted over the many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Stauter; her son, Dr. Robert L. Stauter; parents, Eldora and Ralph Mercer; sister, Janet Andersen and her brothers, James and Robert Mercer. Those left to cherish her memories are her children: Kathy (Ross) Nixon of Ankeny, Iowa; Jane (Brian) Smith of Omaha, Nebraska; Tom (Kelly) Stauter of Gainesville, Georgia; and Carol Stauter of Pompano Beach, Florida; six grandchildren: Louisa Smith (Dave) Lechner of Omaha, Nebraska; Krista Smith of Omaha, Nebraska; Brian Smith Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska; Kam Nixon (Gavin) Schramm of Ankeny, Iowa; Anne Nixon (Jessman) Smith of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Grant Nixon of Ankeny, Iowa; four great granddaughters: Sophie Ann and Gracie Amelia of Omaha, Nebraska; Gillian Mae of Ankeny, Iowa; and Josephine Ann of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Irene Stauter and Joyce Mercer; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; and countless friends. Thank you all for any part you shared in her great life and she knew she had a great one.
