Harriet Goedert

Harriet Goedert, age 88, of Varina, Iowa died April 10, 2018 at her home in Varina. Funeral Mass will take place Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place Friday, April 13, 2018 from 4-7:00 p.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a vigil service at 6:00 p.m. all at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Harriet Goedert Memorial Fund at 205 Ash Street Varina, Iowa 50593, which will support solar installation at the Birthing Center in Haiti, a cause dear to Harriet's heart. The Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda is in charge of the arrangements. Harriet was born March 27, 1930 in rural Fonda, Iowa the daughter of Matt and Loretta (O’Brien) Mackey. As a child, Harriet was baptized and later confirmed. She attended school at St. Columbkille Catholic School in Varina where she graduated in l948. On November 15, 1949, Harriet was united in marriage to Leo “Bud” Goedert at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Together, they were blessed with eight children; Sharon, Jane, Elizabeth, James, William, Paul, Carol and John. Harriet was active in the community being a member of the Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, American Legion Society and the Legion of Mary Society. In her spare time, Harriet enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and playing cards and Scrabble. She especially enjoyed winning at checkers against the grandkids. Harriet also enjoyed doing arts and crafts. Family was very important to Harriet and she treasured the time she was able to spend with them. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Leo “Bud” in 2014; parents, Matt and Loretta Mackey; daughter, Betty and husband, John Mahoney; granddaughter, Katherine Mahoney; great grandson, Ryder Hinkel; brothers: William Mackey, Matt (Ruth) Mackey, John Mackey, Richard (Janet) Mackey, Gene Mackey, and Garrett Mackey; and sisters: Rose (Joseph) Kirsch and Patricia Erickson.
