Evelyn Carolyn Currie

Evelyn Currie, age 92, of Schaller, Iowa died May 9, 2013 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake. Evelyn Carolyn Ploeger was born March 15, 1921 in Storm Lake, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frederick and Amelia (Luelf) Ploeger. She was baptized as an infant at the Immanuel Reformed Church in rural Schaller where she was later confirmed. Evelyn was a 1938 graduate of Hayes Township School. Evelyn was united in marriage to Wilbur Currie at the Methodist parsonage in Schaller on December 15, 1940. Evelyn and Wilbur were devoted to each other and their four children: Daryl, Diane, Darlene, and Dwight. They first farmed near Galva, Iowa and in 1956 they moved west of Schaller, where they farmed until 1984. The family attended the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in rural Schaller until it closed, and then joined the Schaller Methodist Church. Evelyn was very active in the church where she taught Sunday School for several years and was a member of the Ladies Aid. Wilbur and Evelyn were strong supporters of school activities and enjoyed sharing their knowledge as 4-H leaders. In her spare time, she loved helping out on the farm and raising Angus cattle. She enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, crocheting, sewing, and canning. Evelyn treasured spending time with her family and especially enjoyed making things for her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Diane (Ralph) Tapper of Hastings, Minnesota; Darlene (Howard) Raveling of Schaller, Iowa; Dwight Currie of Nokomis, Florida; daughter-in-law, Deb Currie of Burnsville, Minnesota; grandchildren: Sarah (Ryan) Hummel of Hastings, Minnesota; Laura (Jim) Leary of Martinez, California; Tom (Simone) Tapper of New York, New York; Linda Raveling of Denver, Colorado; great grandchildren: Mason and Seth Leary; Hugh and Ian Hummel; Zachary Raveling; great great grandchild, Izaq Raveling; many nephews and nieces; extended family and friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Currie; parents, Frederick and Amelia Ploeger; son, Daryl Currie; and her brothers and sisters.
