Donald Murphy

Donald Murphy, age 71, of Huxley, Iowa and formerly of the Fonda, Iowa area passed away Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 9:30-11:00 a.m.at the church. In lieu of flowers, any memorial funds will be contributed to Camp Courageous and St. Luke's Hospital for Children. The Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda is in charge of the arrangements. Donald R. was born April 25, 1944 to William and Helen (Mackey) Murphy. Growing up, he attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School in Fonda. Upon graduation, Don attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska and Colorado State University at Ft. Collins, Colorado. On July 1, 1967, Don was united in marriage to Linda Hogan. They raised their three children on their farm in the Fonda area. Don farmed for 42 years and then retired in Huxley, Iowa and wintered in Mercedes, Texas. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. In his spare time, Don enjoyed golfing, boating, spending time outdoors, driving his convertible, and helping others. Don loved playing cards and cheering on the Iowa State University Cyclones. Don was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He also served as Grand Knight and District Deputy for the 3rd degree Council, Fonda. He had also served on the REC Board and the Calhoun County Fair Board. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Linda; three children and seven grandchildren: son, Jason and Tisha (Lake) Murphy; grandchildren: Miranda, McKayla and Mason Murphy; son, Thomas and Jodi (Schaefer) Murphy; grandchildren: Morganne and Abby Murphy; daughter, Christina Callahan; grandchildren: Kayleigh and Conor Callahan; brother, Jim (Sharon) Murphy; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Murphy; extended family and many friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen Murphy; brother, Robert Murphy; and granddaughter, Miriah Murphy.
