Donald J. Main

Donald J. Main, age 95, of Des Moines, Iowa and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa died March 27, 2012 in Des Moines. Donald John Main was born May 30, 1916 in Appleton, Minnesota, the son of Otis Evan Main and Theresa (Timmins) Main. As a young child, Don lived in Appleton before moving to a farm in the Cherokee area in 1927. Don graduated from St. Maryâ€™s High School in Cherokee in 1933. In 1939, Don was united in marriage to Eunice Peterson in Storm Lake. Together, they were blessed with nine children: Sondra, Beverly, Patti, Jackie, Janet, Becky, Cathy, Nita and Robert. In 2009, Don and Eunice celebrated 70 years of marriage with a family reunion in Storm Lake. Don served in the Army Air Force in 1945. He worked as a supervisor for Kingan Meat Packing Plant, which later became HyGrade, for 38 years. He then delivered mail for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for nine years. Don enjoyed fishing, gardening, especially his raspberry plants, coin collecting and playing bingo. He made doll houses, cradles, machine sheds and bulletin boards for his grandchildren. Don was a man of high integrity and deep faith with a gentle spirit. He loved spending time with his family. We thank God for the time He allowed us to treasure Dad on earth. Dad and Mom are together dancing in heaven. Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Sondra (Robert) Miller of Rock Valley, Iowa; Beverly (Dale) Reis of Wichita Falls, Texas; Patti Sampers of Lakewood, Colorado; Jackie (Richard) Thompson of Des Moines, Iowa; Janet (William) Engler of Sac City, Iowa; Becky (Richard) Dirkx of Storm Lake, Iowa; Cathy (Timothy) Bueb of Clive, Iowa; Nita (Dennis) Miller of Des Moines, Iowa; Robert (Jody) Main of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; 32 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; sisters-in-law, Viola McMahon and Denise Hjelle; extended family and friends. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice; infant son, John; son-in-law, James Sampers; his parents; five sisters; and three brothers. Memorials may be directed to St. Maryâ€™s Foundation.
