Dale Robert Carter

Dale Robert Carter was born on March 19, 1935 in Alta, Iowa to Robert and Evelyn (Hix) Carter. He died October 27, 2016 in Stuarts Draft, Virginia due to complications of Parkinson’s disease. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Storm Lake City cemetery. Dale grew up in Alta where he graduated from high school in 1953. After a year as a college student, he joined the United States Air Force and served from 1954-1958. While stationed in Colorado, he met his bride of 58 years, Bonnie Goodrich. They married in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to DeKalb, Illinois where Dale attended the University of Northern Illinois graduating in 1961 with a Bachelors of Science Degree. Dale and family lived in Virginia and Tennessee where Dale worked as a Certified Public Accountant in a public accounting firm, industry and banking. Dale retired in 2002. Dale was a member of the Boone United Methodist Church in Boone, NC. His faith was central to his life as he was very involved in the church and its mission projects including three trips to Guatemala to help build a church and school in the town of Patzibal. Dale also enjoyed sports and coached youth baseball and officiated at high school football games. He continued to be an enthusiastic follower of his children and grandchildren’s sports. Dale is survived by his wife, Bonnie, and children: Anne Howell (Walker), Idaho Falls, ID; Mark Carter (Lorraine), Cary, NC; Bruce Carter (Amy), Medina, OH; and Jane Rogers (Paul), Crozet, VA. He has nine grandchildren: Kathryn and Megan Howell; Jessica and Nicholas Carter; Mya, Marley, and Camarie Carter; and Eric and Kelly Rogers and one great-grandchild, Cora Howell. He also leaves his sister, Mary Carter, Dubuque, IA, his sister-in-law, Charlotte Carter, Alta, IA and brother and sister-in-law, Don and Mary Lou Goodrich, Indianapolis, IN. In addition three nieces, a nephew and his favorite cousins survive him. His parents, infant brother, Kent, and brother, Kenneth preceded him in death. Dale’s family was the most important part of his life and he always looked forward to the family gatherings. Dale enjoyed socializing and tried to attend his high school reunions and kept in contact with many classmates. He could always be counted on to tell a story that was engaging but often exaggerated. He could make you believe he was a Civil War or WW 1 veteran and the groans he received from his listeners did not inhibit him. Dale brought joy into the lives he touched, lived optimistically with the Parkinson’s and will be missed by family and friends alike.
