Cyril Louis Nieland

Cyril L. Nieland, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Cyril Louis Nieland was born April 2, 1927 in Breda, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Mary (Grote) Nieland. As a child, he was baptized, received his First Communion, and was confirmed at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda. Cyril attended school at St. Bernard Catholic School in Breda where he graduated in 1945. On February 10, 1948 Cyril was united in marriage to Barbara Ruth Reis at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm north of Sac City where they were blessed to raise seven children: Steve, Jean Ann, Jerry, Shirley, Bruce, Ann, and Brenda. They continued to live on the farm their entire married life. Cyril was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. After moving to Storm Lake in 2011, he attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. To Cyril, farming was more than just a job; it was a way of life. He loved the time he spent tending crops, and raising livestock. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and traveling with his family. Cyril will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Steve (Rose) Nieland of Newell, Iowa; Jerry (Deb) Nieland of Newell, Iowa; Shirley Mitchell (friend, Bob Leiting) of Sac City, Iowa; Bruce (Robin) Nieland of Newell, Iowa; Ann (Randy) Bonde of Alexander, Iowa; Brenda (Coby) Shank of Clive, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Ina Rae Nieland of Carroll, Iowa; grandchildren: Amber Nieland, Randy Nieland, Glenda Schick, Jennifer Tovar, Andrew Mitchell, Reggie (Jade) Mitchell, Rebecca Goodwin, Amy (Justin) Barber, Angie (Brian) Beal, Adam Nieland, Aron (Crystal) Nieland, Ashley (Reagan) Swisher, Laura Bonde, Caylee Shank, Briana Woods and Joshua Shank; brother, Paul (Connie) Nieland of Lake View, Iowa; sisters: Irene Bierl of Sioux Falls, Iowa; Jolene Jensen of Anamosa, Iowa; Charlotte Carter of Alta, Iowa; many great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; extended family and friends. Cyril was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara Nieland; infant daughter, Jean Ann Nieland; brothers, Art and Pat Nieland; sister Florence Evers.
