Carolyn Thompson, age 87, of Alta, Iowa passed away Thursday, August 11, 2022. Memorial services will take place Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Carolyn Florence Lau was born September 3, 1934 in Norfolk, Nebraska one of five children born to Fred and Linda (Winter) Lau. As an infant she was baptized and later confirmed. Growing up, Carolyn attended school in Clearwater Nebraska, where she graduated in 1952 as the Valedictorian. Following high school graduation, she attended Wayne State Teachers College where she obtained her Teacher’s Certificate in 1954. On November 24, 1954, Carol was united in marriage to Clair Thompson at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. Carol and Clair were loving partners for over 68 years and together, they were blessed with three children: Terri, Doug, and Sue. Carol was an elementary school teacher, teaching in both Wakefield and Omaha, Nebraska and Blencoe, Iowa and was known for her creative and fun way of engaging students. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake where she served as church secretary for 22 years, always serving as a model to the importance of relationships, being first and foremost a friend; working person to person, heart to heart. She also was a member of church circles, bible studies, and PEO and served on the Lake Creek Ladies Board and as a Girl Scout and Campfire Girl Leader for many years. Carol enjoyed traveling, golfing, and dancing. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards and Mahjong. Carol was very talented at cooking and baking, along with pottery and other arts. Family was extremely important to Carol and she treasured attending activities of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Carol will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her and who were so generously loved by her. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Clair Thompson of Alta, Iowa; children: Terri (Jeff) Vandercook of Eagan, Minnesota; Doug (Kari) Thompson of Storm Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Adam (Chantel) Thompson of Des Moines, Iowa; Ben (Amber) Thompson of Norwalk, Iowa; Ali Vandercook of Rosemount, Minnesota; great grandchildren: Zofia and Kiera Thompson and Jace Thompson; brothers: Glen Lau of Lincoln, Nebraska; Ron (Jan) Lau of Johnson Lake, Nebraska; sisters: Veryle Riggert of Westerville, Ohio; Judy Meyer of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Thompson of Storm Lake, Iowa; extended family and many friends. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Linda Lau and her daughter, Sue Thompson Kruse.
