Florence Schoenthal

Florence Schoenthal, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa formerly of Schaller, Iowa died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Schaller. Burial will follow in the Schaller Cemetery. Visitation will take place Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements. Florence Edgington was born December 14, 1917 in Yetter, Iowa the daughter of George Martin and Minnie Alice (Rawlings) Edgington. Florence attended school in Sac City, Iowa. On May 9, 1935 Florence was united in marriage to Jonathon King at the First Christian Church Parsonage in Sac City. Together they were blessed with one son, Robert. After Jonathon passed away, Florence married Merle Schoenthal on July 10, 1983 at the Lakewood Ballroom in Lake View, Iowa. Florence spent her life working at the Schaller Popcorn Company and cleaning homes. She was a faithful member of the Schaller Methodist Church. She loved to dance and after the death of her first husband, she went with friends to many dances. While dancing at Lakewood Ballroom in Lake View, she became reacquainted with Merle Schoenthal whom she had known in elementary school in Sac City. Merle’s wife had recently died and as Merle and Florence spent more time dancing, they realized they would like to spend the rest of their lives together. They celebrated twenty-five plus years together. Florence also liked to cook and entertain family and friends. Popcorn Days were always a favorite time as she invited friends and family together to celebrate Schaller’s heritage. Some years there were 30-40 gathered for a picnic lunch in the backyard following the parade. Fun and good food were enjoyed be all in attendance. Florence will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Robert (Sharon) King of Des Moines, Iowa; LeRoy (Kathy) Schoenthal of Lake View, Iowa; Nadine Meeks of Fort Washakie, Wyoming; grandchildren: Timothy (Joan) King and their children, Hannah and Heather; grandson-in-law, Darryl Dalen and his children: Nicholas, Stephanie, and Kyle; Jed (Cody) Meeks and their children: Leona, Nathen, and Devon; Erica Meeks and her children, Taj and Nuvia; Shiloh (Juan) Stevens-Plascencia and their children, Joaquin and Anexia; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Florence was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Jonathon King and Merle Schoenthal; sister, Lillian Mowry; infant brother, Merton Edgington; brothers: Mike and Lawrence Edgington; granddaughter, Patti Dalen; son-in-law, Pete Meeks.
