Donald Emmett Behm

Donald E. Behm, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, November 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place Sunday, November 22, 2015 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Mary's Growing Our Faith Building Fund. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Donald Emmett Behm was born May 18, 1927 in Mondamin, Iowa, the son of John and Elizabeth (McEvoy) Behm. He was one of twelve children. As an infant, Don was baptized at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa, where he was later confirmed. Don attended school and graduated from Missouri Valley High School. On July 23, 1945, Don enlisted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country as a radio operator, and received a Victory Medal. Don was honorably discharged on November 16, 1946. On September 5, 1949, Don was united in marriage to Jean McCrickard at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Missouri Valley. Together they were blessed with five children: Pamela, Rod, Jeff, Tracy, and Mike. Don worked as the grocery manager at Safeway in Storm Lake for many years. After its closing, he began working at Hy-Vee. Don was currently a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. He was in the Knights of Columbus, and served as a former Grand Knight. Don was also a member of Kiwanis Club. For over twenty-five years, Don enjoyed writing his column in the Storm Lake Times called, “Cracker Barrel”. Don was an avid football fan, and especially enjoyed watching his favorite teams, Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed riding bike and attending garage sales. Most of all, Don was a family man. He loved attending his grandchildren’s ball games and activities. Don will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend to many. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Jean Behm of Storm Lake, Iowa; children: Pamela (Ted Hesselguesser) Sutton of Omaha, Nebraska; Rod (Judy) Behm of Carroll, Iowa; Jeff (Julia) Behm of Alta, Iowa; Tracy (Ed) Bredvick of Storm Lake, Iowa; Mike (Norma) Behm of Storm Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Mollie (Rick) Cornell, Heather (Jeramie) Hinote, Matt Behm, Mike (Ashley) Behm, Nick Behm, Reverend Patrick Behm, Tom Behm, Robyn Bredvick, Nicole Bredvick, Mark Behm, Jennifer Behm; nine great grandchildren; extended family and friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents.
