Marvin Richardson, age 71, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services Mr. Richardson will be held on Monday, February 4, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call on Sunday, February 3, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00.
Marvin was born on January 25, 1937 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Clarence and Margaret (McClure) Richardson. His family moved to Storm Lake, where he attended Storm Lake elementary schools and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1955. Following graduation, Marvin attended both Buena Vista College and the University of Northern Iowa.
In 1949, Marvin was baptized and confirmed at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. He joined Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on July 5, 1965.
On March 6, 1965, Marvin was united in marriage to Lavon Rathke at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. This union was blessed with two children: Kevin and Kimberly.
Marvin was employed at Lucia Shoe Store in Storm Lake for 10 years and managed the Des Moines Register Agency in Storm Lake for 15 years. He worked as a salesman for M-Y Supply for 23 years, retiring in the spring of 2006. In addition to his work, Marvin was a member of the Storm Lake Fire Department from April 1968 until he was forced to resign due to health in September 1972.
Family was the most important thing to Marvin as evidenced by the quality time he spent with each of them. He especially liked to read and enjoyed babysitting his grandchildren. Marvin and Lavon loved to travel and spent much time at his parent’s cottage in Minnesota.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 42 years, Lavon of Storm Lake; his children: Kevin Richardson and his wife Mary of Hillsboro, Oregon and Kimberly Mish and her husband Sean of Hillsboro, Oregon; four grandchildren: Simone and Alexander Richardson and Kira and Zoe Mish, all of Hillsboro, Oregon; one sister, Marjorie Hansen Porter and her husband Larry from Des Moines, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Lois Leimer and her husband Orlando from Albert City, Ladene Chambers and her husband Bill from Aurora, Colorado and LeAnn Klein and her husband Ivan of Gibbon, Nebraska; extended family and a host of friends.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Margaret Richardson; parents-in-law, Paul and Irene Rathke; brother-in-law Doyle Hansen; niece, Mary Catherine Hansen; and loyal friend, Marvin Youngdahl.
