Jane was born on September 22, 1922 in Essex, Connecticut, the daughter of Charles and Martha (Thompson) Potter.  She enjoyed a happy childhood in Essex before graduating from Pratt High School in Essex in 1940.  Jane continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, where she studied Business and Liberal Arts.  It was at Buena Vista, in 1946, that Jane first joined the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, an organization that she enjoyed and supported for the rest of her life. She entered service to her country during World War II on January 13, 1944, when she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Jane served until January 19, 1946, when she was honorably discharged at the rank of 2nd Class Storekeeper.

On May 12, 1945, Jane was united in marriage to John W. “Jack” Shelp in a ceremony at New London, Connecticut. The couple was blessed with three children: Kevin, Jerilyn and Marla.  The family made their home in Storm Lake, where Jack was engaged in the construction business. Jane kept a warm and comfortable home for her family, where she enjoyed gardening, sewing, music, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Jane worked at the Citizens First National Bank in Storm Lake before she had children.  She later became Personnel Director at Buena Vista County Hospital, a position she kept until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake.

Jane’s family, however, was always most important to her.  She treasured the time she spent with her children and her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Kevin (Tina) Shelp of Nemaha, Iowa; daughter Jerilyn (Steve) Martin of Altoona, Iowa; grandchildren:  Dallas Shelp, Joshua Shelp, Danielle Henderson, Kaitlyn Martin and John Shelp; brother Robert (Dru) Potter of Chester, Connecticut; sisters-in-law Mary Potter of Old Saybrook, Connecticut; Elsa Potter of Ivoryton, Connecticut; Mary Jane Potter of Stuart Florida; and Jean (Bill) Gayer of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law Jay (Katherine) Shelp of Sheldon, Iowa; son-in-law Craig Fleener of Des Moines, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John “Jack” Shelp; her daughter, Marla Fleener; and her brothers, Jim, Russ and Don Potter.
