Harold Whitmer

Harold Whitmer, age 87, of Galva, Iowa died on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm, Monday, March 31, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Galva. Burial will be in the Galva East Township Cemetery with military rites by the Galva American Legion. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 6-8:00 pm, Sunday, March 30, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Galva where the family will be present.

Harold B. Whitmer was born on August 18, 1920 to Orville D. and Hazel M. (Blackburn) Whitmer in Washta, Iowa. He attended school in Galva, graduating from Galva High School in 1938.

On July 18, 1948, Harold was united in marriage to Jean Steele. To this union, two children were born: Heidi and Linda. On July 8, 1995, Harold married Dorothy Cloud at which time he welcomed her children, Mary, Ken and Don, into the family.

Harold proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp, where he was stationed in Texas during WWII.

Over the years, Harold was an active member of the Galva American Legion, a 50 year member of the Grand Lodge of Morningside. He held position in all the offices of the Abu Bekr Shriners, as well as taking part in the Shriner program “Hospital Dads”. In addition, Harold was also a 50 year member of the United Methodist Church in Galva.

Harold cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed camping and fishing. His woodworking was a great pastime, for which his family can continue to see evidence of his talent.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy of Galva; his children: Heidi Stewart and her husband Mark of Tucson, Arizona and Linda O’Kane of Sioux City, Iowa; step-children: Mary Dencklau, Ken Cloud and his wife Linda and Don Cloud and his wife JoAnn, all of Fort Dodge, Iowa; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jean; three brothers; and one sister.
