Elsie Marie Nelson was born January 18, 1911 to Nels Peter and Minnie Vesta (Carrico) Nelson in Battle Creek, Nebraska. She grew up in the Battle Creek area, received her education there and graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1929. On March 24, 1929, Marie was united in marriage to Walter Theodore Werner. The couple was blessed with three children: LaRue Marie, Walter Eugene and Frances LaBelle. Walter and Marie farmed at Meadow Grove, Nebraska for 15 years before moving to Galva, Iowa in 1946, where they had purchased a farm. They lived in the Galva, Schaller and Early, Iowa areas for the rest of their lives, except for a few years when they lived and built two homes on Lake Okoboji in Iowa. They retired on their farm east of Schaller, where they lived until Walter passed away on August 14, 1995. Marie then moved into Schaller. She later lived at Otsego Place in Storm Lake, and then at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake for four years, where she peacefully fell asleep. Marie had a large group of friends with whom she enjoyed playing cards. She was an avid crossword puzzle player. Marie was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, where she had been very active, was a member of Ladies Aid and L.W.M. L., holding office for a number of years. Grandma loved and enjoyed her families; she was always alert and had a joke to share. Her sense of humor and caring ways will be missed daily by those who loved her. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Eugene (Wilma) Werner of Early, Iowa; daughter LaBelle (Richard) Foreman of Schaller; grandchildren: Terry (Andrea) Niemeier of Galva; Dennis (Trish) Niemeier of Galva; Sue (Ray) Lorenzen of Holstein, Iowa; Jeane (Garry) Capers of San Angelo, Texas; Walter (Becky) Werner of Holstein; Wayne (Karen) Werner of Schaller; and Deane (Karen) Werner of Holstein; Rick (Marvelene) Foreman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Sandi (Mike) Bollard of Pochahontas, Iowa; Anne (Jerry) Andresen of Holstein, Iowa; and Steve (Michelle) Foreman of Austin, Texas; 23 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; extended family and friends. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her daughter LaRue; sons-in-law Carl Niemeier and Arthur Less; great-granddaughter Courtney Rae Foreman; her parents; 6 sisters, 1 brother and their mates; as well as Walter's parents, his siblings and their mates except for 2 sisters-in-law and special friends, Margaret and Tony Ulrich and Ferd and Tena Hansen. |
