Millard Dubes

Millard Dubes, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, September 17, 2006 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Services for Mr. Dubes are scheduled for Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Reverend Duane Queen will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, Iowa.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Millard Francis Dubes was born the third child of Clifford and Nellie (Ohlson) Dubes on September 28, 1923 at Aurelia, Iowa. He attended elementary school at Diamond Township country school (Cherokee County), high school at Aurelia and Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa for one quarter. He then returned home to farm with his father on the family farm near Aurelia.

On February 21, 1946, Millard was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Kent at Cherokee, Iowa. The couple was blessed with three children: Jane, Brian and Cameron. Millard and Patricia worked on the family farm together until Patricia’s death on May 14, 1974. Millard retired from farming in 1975 and moved to Storm Lake.

On September 6, 1975, Millard married Darlene (Cartwright) Mart in Ames, Iowa, and acquired a step-son, Craig.

Millard worked a short time for Vista Products canning factory in the warehouse until the company closed, and then worked a short time for Thompson Turkey Industries in the warehouse until that company was purchased by Bil-Mar Foods. Millard then worked as a purchasing agent for Bil-Mar and later Sara Lee Corporation until his retirement.

Millard gave tirelessly of his time in service to his community. He was a member of Farm Bureau, and the country extension service, of which he served as chairman for three years. He was a 4-H leader and FFA honorary farmer. A 30-year member of the Lions Club, Millard served as president of that organization three different times.  He also served  on Storm Lake’s Harker House board, as well as being a caretaker of the Harker House gardens. He was a faithful member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, where he served as Deacon and Elder. Millard also was a world-class volunteer, giving of his time to volunteer for many functions, most notably for the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and for his church.

A devoted husband, father, step-father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, beloved brother and uncle, and valued friend, Millard’s quiet, kind presence will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 31 years, Darlene Dubes of Storm Lake; daughter Jane (Dennis) Braksiek of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; son Brian (Shelly) Dubes of Lenoire City, Tennessee; son Cameron Dubes of New York, New York; step-son Craig Mart of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his brother, Wilmer (Cleo) Dubes of Des Moines, Iowa; his brother-in-law, Eldon Fordyce of Aurelia, Iowa; nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Millard was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Patricia; and two sisters, LaVonne Hoyt and Janet Fordyce.
