He received his primary and secondary education in the Sheldon Schools, where he graduated from high school in 1958. During his high school years, Gary was a stand-out basketball player for Sheldon High School, where he held several school records for scoring and rebounding. Following high school, he continued his education at Morningside College in Sioux City and at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, where he studied Business Management. On October 21, 1962, Gary was united in marriage to Judy Barnes at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon. They were blessed with three children: Scott, Tammie and Tim. In December 1962, Gary and Judy moved to Storm Lake when Arnold Motor Supply opened its Storm Lake location. After becoming manager in 1966, Gary continued to work for Arnold Motor Supply until 1983. From 1984 to 1986, Gary owned and operated his own sporting goods store, The Athletes Corner, in Storm Lake. Until he retired in March 2002, Gary worked in various sales positions, including 11 years in automotive sales at Fitzpatrick Auto Center and Rasmussen Ford in Storm Lake. Gary was a sports fan all his life, enjoying playing or watching football, baseball, basketball and golf. He spent several years volunteering to coach for the Storm Lake Little League. He could always be seen sitting in the stands watching his children’s and grandchildren’s school and sports activities. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan. Gary will be remembered as a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather who would do anything for his family. He will be deeply missed by his family who loved him, and by his many friends. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years, Judy of Storm Lake; son Scott and wife Gale Randall; a daughter, Tammie Swanson; and son Tim and wife Tracy Randall, all of Storm Lake; seven grandchildren: Derrick Randall, Bryce Husske, Brady Randall, Hayley Randall, Ali Swanson, Taylor Randall and Tanner Randall, all of Storm Lake; along with a host of extended family and many friends.
