Arthur Mittelstadt

Arthur William Mittelstadt, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, May 12, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Tom Hinshaw officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. There is no visitation. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Art’s memory to the Buena Vista County Hospice or the Storm Lake Preservation Association.

Arthur “Art” William Mittelstadt was born on July 15, 1915 to William Carl and Mayme (Rhode) Mittelstadt in Storm Lake, Iowa.  He grew up in Storm Lake and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1933.  He worked for Kaplan Grocery, was a route salesman for Peter Pan Bread, and retired after working for Wholesale Market.

On October 17, 1940, Art was united in marriage to Lurene Steig in Storm Lake.  To this union three children were born: Susan Kay, William Bruce and Donald Craig.

Art proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, April 1944 until his honorable discharge in December 1945. He served as a machinist on the ship U.S.S. Queens in the Pacific Theater.

Art enjoyed numerous outdoor activities, especially around the lake. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer and organic gardener. His claim to fame is that he once swam across the lake, he owned an ice sail boat and was once city tennis champion. He loved a good game of cribbage or pool. He was a member of Lake Creek Golf Club, Ducks Unlimited and the Storm Lake AMVETS, where he was a past commander. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and most recently worshipped at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake.

Art is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lurene; sisters Ruth Odden of Freemont, Nebraska and Jean Mansfield of Joplin, Missouri; daughter Sue Hanley of Salem, Oregon; sons Bill (Dee) Mittelstadt of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Don  (Jane) Mittelstadt of Milford, Iowa; grandchildren: Tanya (Bill) Colson of Tigard, Oregon; Eric (Melissa) Larson of Beaverton, Oregon; Neal (Shannon Brooks) Larson of Portland, Oregon; Scott (Melody) Mittelstadt of Mason, Ohio; Lisa (Myron) Friesen of Osage, Iowa; Sarah (Lee) Brezinka of Anoka, Minnesota; Jodi (Mark) Holmes of Littleton, Colorado; Trisha (Steve) Nolan of Rapid City, South Dakota; and Jeni (Tom) Brands of Iowa City, Iowa; 21 great-grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law, Hilmer Odden and Reg Mansfield; and by two sons-in-law, Wayne Larson and Robert Hanley.
