Mary McGuire

Funeral Mass for Mary (Leahy) McGuire will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday June 12, 2004 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Mary died on Tuesday June 8, 2004 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Friday where the family will greet friends from 6-8 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. A Legion of Mary service will be held at 3:30 and a Vigil Service at 7:30 during the visitation on Friday.

Mary (Leahy) McGuire, daughter of Ed and Josephine Leahy, was born May 24, 1903 on a farm north of Danbury. She attended Tower Hill Country School until she was six years old, then she attended St. Patrick’s Catholic school in Danbury, graduating in 1921. Later, Mary taught country school at Danbury for four years.

On January 12, 1926, Mary was united in marriage to Charles T. McGuire in Danbury. The couple farmed in rural Danbury before moving into town in 1950. Charles died in October of 1952.

Some of Mary’s hobbies included working crossword puzzles, reading, sewing, tatting and crocheting. She also enjoyed singing, which she did for banquets and other occasions when she was young.

Mary moved to Sioux City in May of 1954 and worked at St. Vincent’s Special Diet Kitchen for 16 years. She retired in 1970. In February 1988, she moved to Storm Lake where she spent the rest of her life. In August of 1989, she entered the Methodist Manor.

She is survived by her children, Charlotte Sitzmann and husband Robert of Storm Lake, Laurence (Hooley) McGuire and wife Janice of Holstein, Patrick McGuire and wife Judy of Brighton CO; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay McGuire of Marion; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Leahy of Norman, IL; 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Mary in death are her parents and husband; two sons: Cleo and Gerald; one daughter, Pauline Hanson; one grandson; one great granddaughter; one brother Martin Leahy; four sisters: Margaret Forch, Ellen Leahy, Leona Leahy, and Edna Brenner.
