Velma Boyd
Friends may call on Wednesday, July 16th between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present. Velma Lucille Steen was born July 10, 1911, in Havelock, Iowa to Arthur F. and Nellie Steen. After attending schools in Havelock, Atlantic and Sac City, she married Frank Boyd on April 30, 1927. In 1945, the Boyds settled in Newell, where they owned and operated the Kozy Korner Kafe. Velma served on the board of the Newell Public Library, was a member of the Newell Golf Course, United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women; and belonged to the Bid ’n Chat and Mrs. 500 card clubs. Besides playing cards and golfing, Velma enjoyed dancing, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She also spent many hours volunteering at the Good Samaritan Center before retiring in 1991. Velma is survived by her daughters, Jeannette and husband Lloyd Galbraith of Newell and Donna and husband Dennis Henrich of Cherokee, son Steen Boyd and wife Elayne of Storm Lake, daughter-in-law Agnes Boyd of Storm Lake, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews whom she made happy, even when skies were grey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank “Biz” Boyd, and her son Frank Boyd, Jr. |
